Alejandro Martinez Gil—originally from Mexico City—has become a beloved presence in Puerto Vallarta’s music scene, performing regularly at Cuates y Cuetes and other top venues around town. In the spirit of Django Reinhardt, he captivates audiences both solo and in spontaneous collaborations with other talented musicians.
Hailing from a family of accomplished musicians, Alex brings a rich heritage to his performances. His innovative guitar work, shaped by studies at top universities and the guidance of exceptional mentors, consistently impresses. To me, he is one of the finest guitarists I’ve ever heard. Beyond his musical gifts, Alex’s warmth, dedication, and gracious presence make him one of the most genuinely kind individuals I’ve had the pleasure to meet.
Catch him often at Cuates y Cuetes—he’s a local favorite!
This season, Alex has delighted us with Django-inspired jazz, imaginative renditions of early Elvis Presley, and even a hauntingly beautiful version of the Beatles’ Norwegian Wood. His guitar and banjo work shine with originality, and bassist Roberto Falcon adds rich, inventive layers to the sound. On Friday evenings from 6–8 PM at Cuates y Cuetes, Alex performs with French accordionist Gwenaël Micault (“Wen”) and the gifted Magali Uribe, whose melodic voice and violin bring a lyrical grace. Together, they deliver an irresistible mix—from traditional Mexican melodies to French Jazz Manouche and unforgettable interpretations of American classics.
Alex’s solos will leave you breathless. Expect the unexpected—fresh, creative, and joyfully alive.
Puerto Vallarta has clearly become his happy place, and we are all the better for it. Alex pours his talent, energy, and heart into every note he plays, enriching the musical life of Banderas Bay.
2025 Update: Don’t miss the dynamic duo of Nacho Flores and Alejandro Gil sharing their musical magic Sundays at Cuates y Cuetes.
Also, check out Alex’s exciting new project, Almari, featuring Alex on guitar and banjo, Mariel Ramos on violin, Oscar Terrazas on tenor sax and flute, and Mairead O’Grady on percussion. Every Tuesday at 6:00 PM—also at Cuates y Cuetes. An absolute treat for Jazz Manouche lovers!
Happy Birthday Roberto Falconj! 5/18/25. The most beautiful music I have heard from Alex, Roberto and Kim at Cuates y Cuetes! Keep it up!
Norwegian Wood was terrific! Watch for more great combinations as these super talents create even more music for us! Nacho and Alex, Roberto and Alex! They swing!
