I had a big birthday last week. My son and his family came and surprised me from California and my middle daughter is living here in Puerto Vallarta so we had a delightful time together visiting various beaches where they surfed and my granddaughters played in the waves. My birthday dinner was at La Tosca Trattoria da Gaetano in Versalles where one of my favorite musicians, Nacho Flores, was playing incredible Mediterranean music to an appreciative audience of happy diners. The food and wine was wonderful as is always the case when Gaetano is in charge.
Perhaps one of the best things about living here in Puerto Vallarta is being able to entertain your family and friends in this paradise. You never run out of great options! The last night my family was here we had yet another delicious dinner on the beach in front of Cuates y Cuetes where Media Luna was playing a special concert with Caleb and Jaír on guitar, Mariel Ramos on violin, Oscar Terrazas on sax and Roberto Falcón on bass. It was outstanding and they even played Las Mañanitas for my special day. What a treat! There is no doubt about the great spirit that exists between our local musicians and their audience. We are so very lucky.
The spring festival at Cuates y Cuetes brought many of us music lovers together and I was thrilled to see friends and catch up. I look forward to listening to much more music with them as the season progresses.
I know many of my readers attended the First Saturday celebration hosted by ARTEVallARTa Museo at its beautiful new location on G. Prieto Street 164, El Remance, Saturday, April 2. It was an enriching and fun event with the music of Media Luna and an introduction to the beautiful new museum which houses both the old masters of Puerto Vallarta and the new. As a tribute to Puerto Vallarta’s most celebrated artist Manuel Lepe Macedo whos birthdate is April 17, a delicious cake was served to guests and the open bar provided a nice variety of drinks. Nathalie Herling plans to continue the First Saturday tradition each month so try not to miss the next one. Museum entry is free on these evenings and very worthwhile.
Semana Santa is approaching and I am heading north to Nayarit to join my oldest daughter’s family who will be vacationing in the charming town of San Pancho (San Francisco) during their kids’ school vacation. My middle daughter and I will stay nearby in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle where we discovered a very comfortable Airbnb on a previous trip. It will be convenient for surfing near Punta de Mita for her and the dog friendly Airbnb has a lovely garden and pool where I plan to kick back and relax with her dog between activities.
April still holds many special treats for us including the annual Children’s Day and International Jazz Day at Cuates y Cuetes where children are treated to a day of art projects and wonderful guest musicians once again hold forth with innovative performances on Saturday, April 30.
Let’s keep enjoying the music and magic of Puerto Vallarta!
