For several years I have been asking myself exactly what is the International Day of Jazz and what was it’s beginning. I decided to find out. This annual celebration happens worldwide every year on April 30th and is the brain child of renowned jazz pianist Herbie Hancock and his Institute and UNESCO. It comes as a culmination of the month of April’s celebration of jazz music. The goal is to promote education, communication, diversity, and good will through music. The festival website posts videos of past official presentations. I recently watched last years virtual festival and was thrilled with the quality. If you are a lover of jazz, I highly recommend tuning in and watching one or all of the beautifully made videos at jazzday.com.
Ever a forerunner in the promotion of jazz and jazz related music here in Puerto Vallarta Teté, owner of Cuates y Cuetes, has been joining in the celebration of the music every year on International Jazz Day since its inception in 2011 and is registered as a participant with UNESCO. She combines this celebration with another significant event in Mexico, Childrens Day, which falls on the same day. They call their event Chamacos Jazz Fest and International Jazz Day. Chamacos is kids in Spanish. A major goal of the day of jazz is the education of future generations of jazz lovers and creators and who could be more important than children in this endeavor. This year is no exception at Cuates y Cuetes as doña Teté and her devoted staff prepare for the dual event which takes place all day on Saturday, April 30 and beyond at the beachfront venue in front of the pier in the Zona Romantica. There will be fun activities for children and adults and great music by surprise guests.
New on the music agenda in Puerto Vallarta beginning in April is Caleb Cabrera’s new band, Caleb’s Band. Co-Creator of the extremely popular Latin fusion group Media Luna, Caleb now brings together some of the best talents of Puerto Vallarta in a tremendous combination that will absolutely blow your mind. With performances at newly reopened Incanto on the River Cuale for the popular Sunday Brunch beginning at 11:00 AM, to the three nights a week, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, 8:30 to 10:30 at Cuates y Cuetes beachfront restaurant and bar there is no excuse to miss their great music. Caleb has composed wonderful new pieces and arranged magnificent covers of classical, Flamenco and just incredible guitar that excite and enchant audiences. There appears to be no end to the creativity and talent of this young musician! His group consists of the talented sax player Oscar Terazzas, the incomparable bassist Roberto Falcón, extraordinary violinist Mariel Ramos and himself on his magical guitar.
Meanwhile, Ron Nicodemus of San Miguel Live reports that older Media Luna brother Jair debuted his new band Jay Cabrera Band at Paprika in San Miguel de Allende this week with a great group of musicians and a great new sound! Hopefully they will visit Puerto Vallarta in the near future.
Enjoy these opportunities to experience the marvelous live music offered in our own community!
