In 2010 when I starting coming regularly to Puerto Vallarta, my nightly stop for dinner and music was La Palapa Restaurant on the beach just south of the pier in the zona romantica. There I met Raul Simental and spent many evenings listening to his music and enjoying getting to know him. Raul is a troubadour par excellence! His idol, the renowned Oscar Chavez, certainly influences his style. Raul entertained us nightly with traditional Latin American as well as international pieces, always a bit on the poetic side, which I adored.
Time passes and things change and now Raul is a regular performer at River Cafe, a beautiful restaurant/bar on the scenic Cuale River just off the Ignacio Vallarta bridge. He recently celebrated his many year anniversary playing there. The talented Oscar Terrazas joins him on soprano sax on Fridays, a Vallarta favorite and partner in crime since La Palapa days Bob Tansen with his flute stired up the crowd on Thursdays when not visiting his homeland in Glasgow. Sadly, Bob passed away in September of 2023 and will be greatly missed by the Puerto Vallarta music community.
River Cafe has a nice bar where you can enjoy cocktails and/or fabulous dinner and listen to the music. The open dining area enjoys the entertainment as well. The local iguanas that inhabit the trees along the river no doubt also benefit from the beautiful sounds. A gazebo over the river adds even more romance to the evening.
